Captain Hook's blog

From the adventure readings, we learned about mates, harpooners, and pirates. Each group has its own hierarchy, or "pecking order." Whalers even ate meals according to this order, with those in power getting better food and more time to enjoy it.

Blog about a group you are in that has a hierarchy. You could discuss your family, a sports team, a club, activity, or your job. Tell us where you fit in to the pecking order. Who is above you? Who is below you? Discuss how you act differently when dealing with different people.

I think i am in the middle of the pecking order in a sport team like Cross Country. Because i am not the best on the team. But i think the coaches and the kids on the team respect me. Most of the time i act the same around people.

A group my friend has me and others in. He chose us because we make him who he is. There are 9 of us, including my friend who started it, Edwin. He has us ordered from 1-9. I am labeled as number 5. He says there is no real heirarchy, but I'd prefer a different system other than numbers.

On Westbrook High School baseball there are roles. There are 3 different teams. Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman. Varsity is the highest, Junior Varsity the second, and Freshman the 3rd. When I say highest I mean they have the most authority over the 2 other teams. For example if the coach asked us to get the net and bring it onto the field, the 2 younger teams would be the first ones to go and get it. I believe this is a very good example of a hierarchy.

At my job I have managers and more experienced employees above me. I also have new employees below me. I have been working retail for almost a year now, so I have quite a bit of experience, although I have only been at this particular store since December. I think everyone tries to do their job well while their boss is around, even though its not how you might usually work. I would say I am right in the middle, I work hard, but I am not the most experienced. I could never work on a boat, I think it would be way to rough and hard work. My boy friend's dad is a lobster man an he loves it, but says it really hard, and fast work.

In marching band there are a lot of hierarchy. The people above me are the seniors and the directors. The ones below me are the sophomores and the freshman. I act very calm and quiet when dealing with new people. I don't show who I really am until I really get to know them. Im a very outgoing person who loves to meet new people. When dealing with new people it also depends on their attitudes. If they have a bad attitude then I'm most likely not going to ve nice to them unless they are a customer at work.

Where I work there is hierarchy. There is a my general manager, two assistance managers, 5 shift supervisors, two trainers, and chew members. I am a trainer. There are people above me and below me in this job. When I talk to a new crew member is when i have to train them. This means i have to treat them well and be patient. When I'm talking to my mangers or supervisors they know what there doing so they can ask me to do things and I don't have to train them. The crew members that know what there doing I have to ask them to do things and make sure there doing them right or I have to fix what they are doing wrong. Sometimes I have to help someone run a shift like a supervisor asks for my help all the time.

In a pecking order in my house I am at the top. My mom when there is something that needs to be done im the first to be called on cause im the oldest. Then I go and tell my middle sister that mom told her to do it if I am busy or don't want to do it. Then there is my youngest sister at bottom of the pecking order and never has to do anything because she is considered the baby in the family.

This past year in Football I had to come into practice a week late because of work obligations. When I was came back I felt like I was on the low end of the pecking order. I was not in the varsity bay and I received pretty bad equipment. Going through the year I didn't play at all in the first scrimmage against Biddeford, and against Noble I got to play a small amount. Through the year I had to work my way back up the pecking order until I was playing varsity on all sides of the ball. At first It really sucked being on the low end of things but I worked hard and made may way up. I felt like Queequeg in this aspect, he had to show the ship captains his skill to get to where he thought he should be.

On the lacrosse team I am high among the pecking order. The highest being the varsity coach. He has the most authority over the other 2 coaches and the rest of the team. The order goes varsity coach, varsity assistant, JV coach, speaking captain, co-captains, varsity goalie, varsity players, JV goalie, then JV players. Given this order, I would be in the top 5. Having the most authority on the team is connected to playing time, teams, and opportunities in the games.

In jazz band the trumpet section thinks that they run the whole band and that they are the best in the band. I am part of the trumpet section, and while that may not be true, trumpet players tend to have giant egos...it just comes with playing the trumpet. All the sections are important and help the band go. Without any other section the band would not be as good as it is now, and we recognize that.

Most high school sports teams consist of 3 teams. Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman. On most all teams when it come to doing something nobody wants to do they make the freshman do it. For example on the baseball team freshman go get balls that go out of play. For hockey back when I was at Cheverus we made the freshman was the team bottle and bring the to and from practices and games. Sports always have a "pecking order" in place.

Every where that you go there is hierarchy. For example, I am a hostess at Tortilla Flats. There are waitresses, as well as bartenders, and dishwashers, as there are at every other restaurant. I am above the dishwasher because I greet people. However, I am below the waitresses and bartenders because they are serving the people I greet. It kind of makes sense, but I believe that we're all equal and each of us make each others jobs a little easier.

In the jazz band there is a kind of hierarchy. Its not a true hierarchy, but the people in the band believe where they think they stand. All Trumpet players have a huge ego, because they always have the coolest parts, and believe they are above everyone, even the director. Its said that next come the rhythm section on the band, because they are the heart beat. Next comes the woodwind section, who sometimes get sweet part, and lastly the trombones, who usually have a bass line sort of part, but can have cool melody's. Its not a true set pyramid, but everyone seems to think they are on top.

Among the friends I hang out on the weekend, I'm by far the youngest. At first I met disapproval due to my age, being about 2 years younger the second youngest, but over the years I've been integrated with the group and my age is no longer noticed nor mentioned. That being said, I feel like a boss when I'm the only person who never gets carded.

A good example is my job. I'm a "crew member" at Mcdonalds. I would say I'm closer the the bottom of the pecking order due to the fact that I have managers above me, who then have managers above them. & only the newer people are below me. However, the fact that I know how to work drive thru(taking orders & money), I know how to run(get the food for front counter or drive thru) and I also know how to do cabinets in grill. Due to all of this, it gives me more options for where to work & it offers me more hours because they have more leeway with me.

No one is above me. No one is below me. We are equal.

At my work everyone does everything. There are people that are higher than others like the managers and shift supervisors and then there's the trainees and the sandwich artists who wash dishes and make sandwiches. Almost everybody does that, except for the managers who do cashins and cash drops.

With the Hierarchy on the wrestling team there is almost 2 different ways to look at it. Skill and how many years you have wrestled tie in to what grade you are in. The captains are the leaders of the team when coaches are not involved. Below the captains are the other seniors/juniors who have wrestled many years. The people who have not wrestled do not know as much as the people who have so it puts them lower on the totem pole. Freshman and Sophomores are the lowest in the pecking order and have to learn the ropes fast to fit in and be a teammate

In my family my dad would be at the top of the hierarchy because he makes the rules in the house and what he says goes. My mom would come next because she basically stands by his side repeating what he says. My sisters and I don't have any authority and we basically do our chores and ask our parents for permission to do certain things. I think that this is a good example of a hierarchy.

I currently am working at little caesers. I am a counter girl there, meaning a work the cash register and take peoples orders. The pizza makers and I are equal to authority and are at the bottom. Above us is the supervisors, and above them is the assistant manager. Above the assistant manager is the manager, and above him is the boss of the company. The boss's only come in once or twice a week to check on things. They also go to other little caesers to see how each is running, making sure were doing as were supposed to. The people I work with are pretty laid back, except when the boss's come in. When this happens everyone's running around making sure to be doing something. Even if theirs nothing left to be done the boss expects us to be keeping busy. ~ Tasha

I am in the lowest spectrum on the pecking order at NAMCO where i work because i make the lease amount of money and my boss makes the most and the sales men are in the middle because they make more then me with there comission. I am the stock boy, in the stock room...where i stock things. 7.50 an hour :)

In my family my dad is in charge and I am in the middle. My twin little brothers are last. I am above my little brothers because they are only 12 and not very mature.

I am at the bottom of the pecking order in my family. My brother is older and stronger than me so he can beat me up. I also respect my parents and older relatives and do what they ask me to do as long as it is reasonable.

The group I'm apart of is with my group of friends. A group would be Me, Jerry, Erry, and Berry. Berry is usually the less dominant. Erry, Jerry and I all are more dominant. I would be the most dominant or leader I suppose. I guess the personalities when people first meet would decide that.

I am the middle child in my family. I have a brother and a sister. My sister I feel that I have to listen to more. because my sister is older than me. my brother however is younger then me most times I take his ideas into consideration because we are really close in age and he has some of the same ideas as me. I think that when you are older you tend to think that every one has to listen to you and that you are always right and things but the truth is you should listen to your peers i think that this pecking order is true in many places. teams, families, friends, and even in jobs some of the time. I do not agree with it I think that every one should have an equal say, In real life that does not happen.

In my family, I am lower in the hierarchy because I am the oldest child. Out of the kids, I am the highest. My parents are above me though so they have more say and a higher level of power.
In lacrosse, there are a JV and varsity team. Out of those, we have captains and coaches which have more say for us.
Everywhere we go, there are different amounts of power which take over as a hierarchy. Many people are above me, and sometimes I am above others. People tend to hesitate with people with a higher amount of power. But people tend to look up to me when I am seen to have a higher amount of power. It depends and varies with how people are seen.

There are hierarchies in almost everything. You can be in a different place every time. For example, you can be at the top of your family, at the lower part of a sports team, or in the middle in a certain class at school. (intelligence wise) In art class I am at the top of the pecking order. I have experience, I like the class, and the talent. The art teacher and the head of the art department is above me. Also, the people that are better than me are also at the top. Freshmen, less experienced, or people that don't care, are at the bottom.

Hierarchy is almost everywhere. Kids have it on sports teams, work places and in family. I am the middle child in my family, so I am in the middle for pecking order. My younger brother has to do most of the things around the house, while I have to do a few. My older brother doesn't have to do much, mostly because he's in college.

I have two examples that I feel relate to my life that represent a Hierarchy. First off one that anyone can relate to, the "pecking-order" of society. Every kid or teenager is in some sort of group where they are judged, rated, and perceived in different ways. Within the group of their friends they may be "Number 1" or at the bottom of the food chain, but when it comes to society teenagers are always perceived as "the bad" generation and take second to the generations that came before them. No matter when you were born the older generations always look down on the younger generations, so simply put the older you are the higher you are in the "pecking-order."
My second example would be the Military which is my future occupation and is a great example of a hierarchy. No matter what branch you join, everyone is judged on their rank. Rank is everything in the Military, with a higher rank you have more opportunities, make more money, get more respect, take on more of a leadership role, etc. It doesn't necessarily mean you are not treated equally it just means that the more time you put in and effort you put in the more you will get in return. Which can be applied to everything we do.

Shaws Westbrook. I am a Cashier/Bagger, the lowest of the lows. I take orders from everyone in the store, and have no orders to give. I feel like Ishmael, getting the 137th, and I have to see the CRS get the 19th share like Queequeg.

I am close to the top of my pecking order if not the top. I tend to organize plans with friends and help them out. Usually we don't really focus on an order of hierarchy. Everyone in the group of friends brings their own ideas and help in their own way.

During the summer I work at a camp called Camp Sebago. I am a counselor there and in the pecking order that would put me in the upper middle of the pecking order, below me would be the junior staff (Graham Stondak) they a lot of the time have the bad hard working jobs and don't get paid much, and the people above me are en charge of different thing's and people at camp and get paid the big bucks. and then theres the directors of the camp and they are en charge of everyone and everything that happens there... But between you and me, I feel I am the boss.

With track I think im in the middle of the pecking order because I get along with everyone. Usually never have problems with someone, but at home. I am probably below.. more down then I should be.

I am near the top of my soccer team but not at the very top. Players that are in front of me are players that play in the off season. I don't really work as hard as some in the off season. I am on varsity. There are two teams varsity and jv. I get a lot of minutes, and more opportunity than others.

My softball team has a hierarchy. We have our coaches that has control of the captains and players and the captains that keep control of the players. At the same time we all keep each other in check so no one feels to powerful.

My family is a hierarchy. I am at the top of the "pecking order" and everyone listens to me. I am like the captain in the eyes of everyone else who would be the sailors. My mom would be second in the pecking order along with my dad. My mom would be more like the harpooner because she likes to kill and my dad would be the first mate. After them my three brothers and sister would be at the bottom of the pecking order.

I'm in the much higher part of the pecking order of my siblings. I'm 17 years old, and am finishing high school, and planning on college. On the eduction level, I'm much higher than all of my other siblings, and my parents. My brother never finished high school, and is still living at home where as I live in my own apartment. I'm not saying im better than everyone else, but so far it's clear that I am the most successful in my family.
