Captain Crowsnest's Blog

From the philosophy readings, we learned about sea poems, sea songs, and the power of the color of white. We read a sentence from Melville that is 471 words long!

Blog about a song or poem about the sea. Add a link to the song or poem, if you can, so we can share the experience as well.

I picked the song called "Down by the Sea" By Men at Work. This song is an old song and is kind of slow. I picked it because it sounds kind of cool but is very slow. It was a good song for its days. It is different from what i have heard before which is also why i picked this song. I hope you like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJKl_kGWekM

The song I'm going to choose is called "Into the ocean" by Blue October. Its a very good song and I listen to it when I just need time to think and get away. My mind goes off somewhere else but I'm still there. It explains in a way of how I see things and how I feel. I could play it over and over again and never get sick of it. It makes me calm and relaxed. Which if you think about it, the sea and water can make you calm and relaxed as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUGhQyqJSFc

Big And Little Whale
Little whale rocking so gently
Little whale out in the sea.
Whale and I are rocking together.
Whale and I alone in the sea.
Great big whale swimming so strongly.
Great big whale out in the sea.
Whale and I swimming together.
Whale and I alone in the sea.

I chose this poem because it's a short poem about whales. It reminded me about Moby-Dick. It reminded me about Ismael and the crew swimming(hunting) with the whales.

A song I know that almost everyone knows is "A sailor went to sea." It is a well known nursery rhyme that every child grows up. It relates to a song of the sea and has a good rhyming scheme and beat for children. It is a lot of fun to listen to. If you want some amusement for your day, here is the link below.

I chose the song The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. This song explains a true story of a ship wreck at sea. The reason this song is so powerful is because it is a memorial to what had happened. It is a very peaceful song, but can also be very depressing. If you want to enjoy this song, here is a link to the video-

I picked the song "Surfin' USA" by The Beach Boys. This is a good song, but not my type of music to listen to. I'm assuming this was a party song back in its day.

I picked the song "A Hundred Years Ago" by Lesley Nelson-Burns. This songs talks about the sea, and what people thought while they were out at sea. I couldn't find a video for this but there may be one. http://www.contemplator.com/sea/hundred.html

The song I picked is called "Rum Is For Drinking, But Not For Burning" By Senses Fail. There are two versions of the song. I chose the acoustic version. It's one of my favorite songs by the band. Here's the link to the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT37lLEuuAI

I chose the song "Deep Down" by Saosin. The song is about someone who feels lost and is seeking another person to feel less lost and less alone. The ocean represents the problem that gets in the way of them ever being together and feeling whole. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhsLd_i87s8

Styx - Come Sail Away

I think this song is about a man who wants to forget about his problems but just carry's the burden and looks towards the future.

For me I like listening to this song because has a awesome intro and also just gets the blood flowing you know!

I picked a poem called "The Ocean!" The poem I picked is by an independent user on the internet. This person is not a professional making money, they are just expressing their true feelings about the ocean.

I chose this song because it is about the wreck of a ship that was out to sea in Lake Superior. 29 crew members died out to sea and this song is dedicated to them

I chose the song "Farewell and Adieu." This song was made by sailors during the Napoleonic wars. English men who were out a sea for a long time would port and gather supplies to both repair the ship and feed the crew. The crew would often get with the women on shore, because most wouldn't see another for months. This song is a farewell song to ladies of Spain, who are thought to be the finest and most attractive. The poor crew who would find a love at port may never see them again.

I picked the song called "Blow the Man Down" by POTC. It is a older song. It is also a shorter song. I think its a sea song because it is a song about pirates, sung by pirates. It was in the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean"

I chose Baby Beluga by Raffi, because it's a song that talks about a whales life day to day - how relaxing and beautiful the life in the ocean is. It's a children song, and could be very soothing and used as a bedtime song, or could also be just a fun song to act out.

Modest Mouse - Float on
This has a good beat and good lyrics and I enjoy it.

I backed my car into a cop car, the other day.
Well he just drove off, sometimes life's ok.
I ran my mouth off a bit too much, oh what did I say.
Well you just laughed it off, it was all ok.

And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on any way, well.

A fake Jamaican took every last dime with a scam.
It was worth it just to learn some sleight-of-hand.
Bad news comes don't you worry even when it lands.
Good news will work its way to all them plans.
We both got fired on exactly the same day.
Well we'll float on good news is on the way.

And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, alright.
Already we'll all float on.
No, don't you worry, we'll all float on.
Alright, already, we'll all float on.
Alright, don't worry, we'll all float on.

Alright already we'll all float on.
Alright already we'll all float on.
Alright don't worry even if things end up a bit too heavy.
We'll all float on...alright. Already we'll all float on.
Alright already we'll all float on, ok.
Don't worry we'll all float on.
Even if things get heavy, we'll all float on.

Alright already we'll all float on.
(Alright)
Don't you worry we'll all float on.
(Alright)
All float on....

"To the Last Whale"

The Last Shanty by Tom Lewis is about a sailor that tells about his life at sea. Later on in the song he describes all the technology that was developed after he wasn't one anymore. He complains about how the sailors of today aren't the same anymore.

I picked the song the wounded whale by Archie fisher i could only find the lyrics to it but I remember hearing this song before when i was reading a book I cant remember what the book was called but I thought that this matched up with the book pretty well.
The Wounded Whale

Low as the sun from the ocean bed is rising,
Clear on the waters a glimmering light throws;
Now from the masthead the lookouts are crying,
“Clear on yer lee-beam, a whale, there she blows.”

Wake all your sleepers, your larboard and your starboard men,
Main-yard a-back, and yer boats clear away,
Hard on our lee-beam, see the wide waters gleam,
Foaming, and billowing, in glorious array.

Now see old leviathan in vastness a-lying
Making of the ocean a sumptuous bed,
While high above him the seabirds are flying
Combing each billow that he breaks with his head.

High, wide and swimming, great flukes gently driving,
Stately and slowly he sinks in the main.
Now peak your oars awhile, rest from your weary toil,
Watching and waiting his rise once again.

Now row hearties row for the pride of your nation,
Lean on yer oars and let the reeking sweat flow.
Now for the blood let it have circulation,
Forward, on your thwarts, give way all ye know.

Now see how our boats advance, bravely and dancing
Flying like feathers over the dark blue main,
Harpooner, stand, give him some, send both your irons home.
Stern all, trim the boat, let the line run free.

Gallied and sore, fins and flukes in commotion,
Black skin and boats contending the spray,
While loud and shrill screams the horn of the ocean,
Wounded and lost, he brings to in dismay.

Now, haul line every man, gather in all you can,
Lances and spades from the thwarts clear away;
Now peak your oars again while fast each boat remains,
Safely and surely, we'll hold him at bay.

Wounded and lost but with strength undiminished,
See how he lashes his great flukes in the air,
But a lance in the life and the struggle is finished,
See now he sinks, with his chimney on fire.

Now loud and shrill hear the cries of our sailors,
Mocking the whale in his terrible hour,
Watch him as he dies, see the blue signal flies.
Here he goes, fin out, the contest is o'er.

For a song about the sea, I decided to choose "Island In The Sun" by Weezer. I chose this song, because the lyrics are about what a vacation by the ocean can do to a person's behavior. I honestly love this song and I think it's totally rad, and the fact that the lyrics are about love, and the sea, and fun, and happiness really explains what the ocean and the sea can really do.

"When you’re on a golden sea
You don’t need no memory
Just a place to call your own
As we drift into the zone"

Would you go for a sail
On the back of a whale?
Would you sail through the ocean, so blue?

There's a lot you could see
(If the whale would agree)
It's more fun than a trip to the zoo!

So please take the chance, if the chance you should get,
To ride with a whale through the ocean.
You'll get mighty wet,
But it's worth it, you bet,
Just be sure to rub on suntan lotion!

by Helen H. Moore

i picked this poem because it is about whales and we are reading moby dick. so i found a poem about whales

Most of the good songs were taken, so I decided to go with a classic Pirate song. It has a great beat to dance too and usually does a good job cheering anyone up. Enjoy.

I find this song to be the total opposite of Moby Dick.. because they are seamen who do everything.

Some Original Poetry about the Sea:

I feel like I'm sinking deep below the sea.
Darkness is all that surrounds me.
There is no light, but yet I can see.
I'm all alone, I've never felt so free.

This is where I belong.
My mind will flourish, and my body grow strong.
I will swim to the current and let it take me away.
To a brand new day.

The sun will always rise in east, and set in the west.
The sea will never get the best of me but when the time comes,
and Poseidon strikes, their will be no peace.
The storms will wreak havoc, and leave me deceased.

The sun will continue to rise, but I have seen the end.

- Blake Toth

I picked the song "under the sea" which is played in the move The Little Mermaid. Im using this song because it has a nice upbeat tempo that makes you just wanna dance. It makes me want to just go live in atlantis and ride sea horses for ever.

I am going to pick the poem "The Sea(1994-1995)" by Lillian B. Rose. Its a poem telling about how the sea can be calm and a relaxing spot for someone to go. And that when the sea is calm and not crazy it can be a very good place for a couple. http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-sea-1994-1995/

Singing in the sunshine, laughing in the rain
Hitting on the moonshine, rocking in the grain
Got no time to pack my bags, my foots outside the door
Got a date, I can't be late, for the high hopes hailla ball.

Singing to an ocean, I can hear the ocean's roar
Play for free, play for me and play a whole lot more, more!
Singing about good things and the sun that lights the day
I used to sing on the mountains, has the ocean lost it's way.

Sitting round singing songs 'til the night turns into day
Used to sing on the mountains but the mountains washed away
Now I'm singing all my songs to the girl who won my heart
She is only three years old and it's a real fine way to start.

These are the lyrics to the song. Its called "The Ocean" by Led zeppelin. I chose this song because he clearly had a love for the ocean, which reminds me of Moby Dick :)

Great songs, and great variety. You made me feel old, though, Kevin -- I loved Men at Work when I was little!

It's interesting to me that the poems and songs either portray the ocean as peaceful or scary. I shared a darker song in the Google Doc. Here's a sweet one from Tom Petty:
http://youtu.be/Ozgmyx919a4

"You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free."

Also, my word verification is orcah! That's so fitting.

People on board the ships would actually sing to keep themselves sane. Including the pirates who are portrayed as big, ruff, tough, scary people. They would also sing to make sure everyone is on the same page while working. If someone wasn't paying attention then they might cause an accident on the ship. This is a song that they would sing if they didn't like their captain. It isn't the most appropriate song to sing but it seemed to cheer them up and it worked for them.

This song is called Fathoms Below from "The Little Mermaid". I picked it because it's from a movie that's all about the sea. The song is about mysterious things that could be waiting for you in sea.

I chose the Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Song. This song is played in all of the Pirate of the Caribbean movies. It has no lyrics. It is a pirate song because the song makes you feel like you are on a voyage out to sea. When I listen to this song I feel like I am on a pirate ship.
